1984: the Beginning, the Method, the Promise
In 1984, in Maranello, Stefano Freno decided that Nocino deserved a workshop that would treat it as a work of art, not as a product. He rigorously selects the finest ingredients and trusted suppliers, perfects a recipe that exalts the soul of the walnut, and signs a harmonious, balanced bouquet that immediately becomes recognizable — also thanks to the drop-shaped bottle that makes its way into the most discerning bars and restaurants of Modena, in Italy.
That recipe is our pledge: faithfully preserved to this day, it ensures a timeless taste — the same essence that has captivated generations of connoisseurs.
In 1994, the baton was passed to Giovanna, who carried Il Mallo beyond Emilia and brought it into dialogue with haute cuisine – reaching even the table of Gualtiero Marchesi, Italy’s most celebrated chef. Since 2008, with Roberta by her side, the third generation has stepped in to lead: bringing a fresh vision and new projects, while remaining faithful to the unwavering pursuit of quality and craftsmanship that defines our essence. Under her guidance, Il Mallo began to expand beyond Italy’s borders, taking its premium liqueurs to an international stage.
We believe in authenticity that stands the test of time, in conscious craftsmanship that always chooses the harder path because it’s the right one, in the culture of taste as a daily and refined gesture. That’s why we produce slowly, with genuine ingredients and pure techniques, seeking balance before effect, depth before the obvious. Il Nocino il Mallo has become a symbol because it has managed to stay true to itself while the world changed: a fine and intense taste that speaks of Modena and its ritual, recognized and loved both at home and abroad. It’s not just what you drink, it’s what it represents: a small Italian gesture of elegance after dinner, a gift that says “you matter to me.” Enzo Ferrari knew it well: he would stop in front of our Maranello factory to load crates of Nocino, always kept a few bottles in his office, and gifted them to drivers, actors, and distinguished clients — proud to share an excellence of his homeland. This is how a tradition becomes an emblem: when it wins over the best, without ever yielding to haste.
